My Pal
Mauriel Joslyn of Sparta, Ga. is seen donned in her circa WWI M1917 Helmet or "Broadie helmet" Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010 in downtown Harlem, Ga. Thousands came out to celebrate the life of one of the greatest comedians of the 20th Century, Oliver Hardy in his self-named annual festival. The civics teacher was out with her husband, Rick, informing the public about the first World War. The two have been teaching others about the war for about seven years. Mauriel acquired the steel helmet from a collector. Inside is inscribed 318th INFTry A.E.F. "My Pal." "People don't realize that the Salvation went to war, as non-combatants of course," Mauriel said. "Because there is only one person left from this war, people don't think about WWI. Everything we know about modern warfare came from this war." (Corey Perrine/The Augusta Chronicle)
