Smokey Situation
JR Rementeria points to where a fire started the day before at State Road 29 and I-75 eastbound as the Big Cypress National Preserve burns in rural Collier County Saturday, March 30, 2013. The so-called Huckabee Wildfire, which started Friday afternoon, has burned through about 20,000 acres on the Big Cypress National Preserve. The resulting smoke caused the Florida Highway Patrol to shut down the Alligator Alley portion of Interstate 75 from about 3 a.m. to 10 a.m. State Road 29 also was shut down from U.S. 41 to Oil Well Road. As of Tuesday, crews had the fire 45 percent contained. Officials said 64 people with multiple agencies were committed to fighting the fire. The Huckabee fire began north of Fire Prairie Trail along Turner River Road and continues to burn to State Road 29 to the west and Interstate 75 to the north. Officials are investigating the fire as a possible arson. (Corey Perrine/Naples Daily News)
